The term ‘Hell” is derived from “Helheimr,” a frigid world presided over by the Goddess Hel which Nordic pagans believed to be part of the nine realms of the cosmos. Whereas warriors who died in battle could be assured of a spot in Valhalla, other departed Norse souls were believed to be sent to the rather less comfortable eternity offered by Helheim.
